A Lifeline on the Horizon: Halyna’s Story

Twenty miles from the front lines in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, Halyna, a widowed grandmother living in the chaos of war, keeps an eye on the road under the muted, overcast skies that offer a thin veil of protection from the drones that patrol the horizon. The clouds make it just safe enough for the van carrying her primary source of nourishment to navigate the roads toward her home.
Since the war began, Halyna’s reality has been defined by isolation and scarcity. Groceries are nearly impossible to find. On the rare occasions they are available, prices have skyrocketed far beyond the reach of a modest pension. Traveling to a market has become a life-threatening gamble due to the prevalence of drones. This leaves her dependent on the bravery of those willing to bring help to her doorstep.
Every delivery by Hope For Ukraine volunteers is meticulously planned to coincide with poor visibility to evade detection. Teams are equipped with drone detectors to monitor the air for threats. Exchanges happen quickly because staying out in the open for too long is too dangerous.
Halyna is part of a staggering demographic often overlooked in the chaos of war. Of the 30 million citizens remaining in Ukraine, 10 million are seniors. Half of those elderly individuals report feeling completely forgotten by the world. They often live without a family safety net to catch them.
As the volunteers check in to ensure she does not need immediate medical help, the weight of the moment often brings Halyna to tears. She tells them that she is grateful that she is not forgotten and that their presence every month allows her to worry just a little less.
Her story is one of thousands unfolding across the country. Amidst the ruins of the Kharkiv region, Halyna and people like her are the reason we show up. Even in the darkest times, a single act of resilience and perseverance can restore a sense of dignity and hope.
